Classification of Class 5.2 Organic Peroxides

Class 5.2 organic peroxides are organic substances containing a bivalent -O-O- structure that can be considered derivatives of hydrogen peroxide, where one or both hydrogen atoms are replaced by organic groups. These compounds are thermally unstable, capable of decomposing exothermically and self-accelerating when heated. The main types of organic peroxides include hydroperoxides, dialkyl peroxides, diacyl peroxides, peroxyesters, percarbonates, and ketone peroxides.

1.United Nations Transport Classification Method (A-G)

Organic peroxides are classified into seven types, A through G, based on their level of hazard. Type A peroxides are prohibited from transport, whereas Type G peroxides are not restricted by the provisions of Item 5.2. The "Dangerous Goods List" under the TDG includes 20 UN numbers associated with organic peroxides, detailing their respective hazard types.

The organic peroxides that are permitted for container transport are listed in the United Nations "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations" under section 2.5.3.2.4 "Organic Peroxides Table." This table helps determine the classification, control temperature, and critical temperature required for the transport of the peroxides.
