Tertiary Butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), with the chemical designation CAS No. 75-91-2, had a reported production capacity in China of 1,200 tons as of 2023. Major manufacturing facilities include Nouryon and Qiangsheng Functional Chemistry Ltd., with LyondellBasell also serving as a key global supplier. Before the expansion of Nouryon's Ningbo plant, TBHP experienced a temporary shortage and a price surge in 2022 due to extreme cold weather conditions. TBHP is commonly used as an initiator in polymerization reactions (e.g., for PVC and acrylic emulsion polymerization) and as a precursor for synthesizing other organic peroxides.

Key points about TBHP:

1. With a Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) of 80°C, TBHP is considered one of the safer organic peroxides, not requiring temperature-controlled transport during summer.

2. It is the only organic peroxide that mixes well with water, typically available in 70% and 80% aqueous solutions, with formulations of 15% and 7.5% also possible based on customer requirements.

3. TBHP has a relatively high theoretical active oxygen content of 17.78%, making it a critical raw material in the production of other organic peroxides, such as Nouryon's TRIGONOX C and TRIGONOX B, synthesized using TBHP(TRIGONOX A-W70).

4. It is commonly packaged in 25 kg or 190 kgPE drums or in 800 kg IBC containers.

5. As a key raw material in organic peroxide production, large-scale peroxide factories typically include TBHP in their product lines to ensure a stable supply chain, whereas smaller factories might opt for stable contract manufacturers.

6. TBHP's applications are diverse, serving as an oxidant, polymerization initiator, pharmaceutical synthesis intermediate, curing agent for composites, dye producer in fine chemicals, and wastewater treatment agent in environmental chemistry.
