Application of Organic Peroxides in Rubber
 Dec 21, 2023|View:508

The commonly used vulcanization systems for rubber are sulfur vulcanization and peroxide vulcanization. Sulfur vulcanization is mainly employed in diene-type rubbers, resulting in sulfur-crosslinked rubber. Peroxide vulcanization, on the other hand, has seen rapid development in recent years and is a widely applied vulcanization system. Organic peroxide vulcanization can be used for both diene-type rubbers and non-diene-type rubbers. The crosslinks produced in this process are C-C bonds, which have a higher bond energy than the single sulfur, double sulfur, and multiple sulfur bonds generated in sulfur vulcanization. As a result, the rubber vulcanized with organic peroxides exhibits excellent heat resistance, low permanent compression set, simple compounding, and is less prone to frosting compared to sulfur vulcanization.

With the exception of butyl rubber and halobutyl rubber, nearly all other types of rubber can be vulcanized using peroxides. The most commonly used rubbers in peroxide vulcanization include silicone rubber (VMQ), ethylene-propylene rubber (EPDM), nitrile rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR), chlorinated polyethylene (CM), thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV), chloroprene rubber (CR), and others. Although the peroxide vulcanization system is straightforward, the rubber type, the variety and amount of peroxide and crosslinking coagents, as well as the interaction of other compounding agents, have a significant impact on the crosslinking and performance of the vulcanized rubber. The processing conditions for rubber also need to be compatible with the vulcanization system.

Silicone rubber is a non-reactive stable material that is used in extreme temperature conditions while still maintaining its chemical and physical properties. Evergreen Chemicals offers Nouryon organic peroxides like PERKADOX® BC-FF, 14S-FL, PD-50S-PS, 14-40B-PD, TRIGONOX® 145-E85, 101-45B-PD, 101-45D-PD, 101-45S-PS that are formulated to crosslink a variety of low and high durometer silicones in food grade or industrial applications. Each grade has a very fine particle size to mix easily.
