TBPO: Essential Insights and Industrial Applications

As of 2023, the documented production capacity for TBPO in China stands at 2,000 metric tons, with major manufacturers including Arkema, Lanzhou Auxiliaries, Nippon Oil & Fat Corporation, and Nouryon. It is anticipated that Qiangsheng Chemical will launch a TBPO production line by 2025. TBPO is recognized as an entry-level, temperature-controlled organic peroxide, boasting a wide range of applications. It is utilized as a curing agent for thermosetting resins, an initiator for PVC and acrylics, and a cross-linking agent in the petrochemical sector. Typically, factories producing temperature-controlled peroxides will have this product line due to its general applicability and high usage, which helps in reducing fixed production and transportation costs.

Chemical Name: Tert-butyl peroxy-2-ethylhexanoate
CAS Number:3006-82-4

Temperature Sensitivity: TBPO has a Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) of 35°C, with recommended storage temperatures not exceeding 10°C and not falling below -30°C to prevent crystallization. The industry standard is to transport it at 0°C. During the winter in northern China, where temperatures are naturally low, some factories opt for ambient temperature transport. Extremely cold conditions, such as -40°C in Inner Mongolia, pose significant challenges in preventing crystallization.

Alternative Name: TBPO is alternatively known as TBPEH, a shorthand derived from its chemical formula.

Comparison with BPO: TBPO and BPO share the letters B, P, and O, indicating overlapping applications, particularly in the acrylic industry. TBPO is superior in terms of activity and color stability compared to BPO, making it an advanced replacement.

Purity and Activity: TBPO boasts a purity level of over 98%, categorizing it as a pure substance with a theoretical active oxygen content of 7.4%.

Industrial Applications: In the Unsaturated Resin Process (URP) industry, TBPO is primarily used as a mid-temperature curing agent for artificial stones and is employed in SMC/BMC processes. It is also used in combination with TBPB and TBEC as a low-temperature curing agent, and some pultrusion extrusion processes utilize it as a curing agent.

Packaging and Transport: TBPO is commonly packaged in 20 kg and 25 kg PE drums. Transportation via railway or air is prohibited.

Logistics and Safety: Factories with an annual output of more than 300 tons usually have their own refrigerated transportation vehicles to ensure safe and controlled delivery.
