Changtai Yangtze River Bridge Main Project on Changzhou Side Completed! Utilizes the World's Largest Carbon Fiber Composite Cable

On May 7th, the final large segment of the steel beam for the main navigational bridge on the Changzhou side of the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge was smoothly hoisted into place, marking the completion of the main project on the Changzhou side of the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge. Simply put, the bridge and roads on the Changzhou side of the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge are now connected! The entire bridge is expected to be joined in June.

It is understood that the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge is currently the largest-span cable-stayed bridge under construction in the world for both railway and highway use. Spanning 10.03 kilometers, it is located between the Taizhou Bridge and Jiangyin Bridge, crossing the river to connect Changzhou and Taizhou. The bridge consists of the main navigational bridge, the Luanzhou non-navigational bridge, the Tianxingzhou dedicated navigational bridge, and the Luanzhou dedicated navigational bridge, as well as the north and south connections. The cross-river bridge is divided into two levels and is the first in the Yangtze River to integrate an expressway, an intercity railway, and a first-grade road.

Upon completion, it will set "six world records":

❖ The largest-scale multifunctional load asymmetrically arranged bridge
❖ The largest span of a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 1208 meters and a main tower height of 350 meters
❖ The longest continuous steel truss girder with a length of 4620 meters
❖ The largest size carbon fiber composite cable
❖ The largest span of a steel truss arch bridge used for both railway and highway with a span of 388 meters
❖ The highest strength bridge cable made from parallel steel wires with a tensile strength of 2100 megapascals

For those interested in the composite materials industry, the highlight of this bridge is the use of the world's largest carbon fiber composite cables. Carbon fiber cables are known for their light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, low stress relaxation rate, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. The cables fully utilize the tensile strength properties of carbon fiber, changing the original load transfer paths of the bridge's towers and beams. This fundamentally solves the problems of corrosion and fatigue in steel cables, achieving a high-performance bridge structure characterized by light weight and long life.

In recent years, carbon fiber cables have been successfully applied in the Xinghua Road Bridge over the Tuhai River in Liaocheng, Shandong Province, and the Huangshan Road Cable-Stayed Bridge in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province. The successful application of carbon fiber cables in bridges has milestone significance in the field of civil engineering, opening new realms for the application of carbon fiber composite materials and new ideas for bridge design.
